INTELLECTUAL MERIT

The proposed research will design, implement, and experimentally test ZCNET, a novel LPWAN technology to support IoT, which will require an unprecedented number of devices to be connected to the Internet. Base on the preliminary results, ZCNET will likely outperform the current state of art, LoRa, in communication range, as well as achieving more than an order of magnitude gain in network capacity. By probing the limits of wireless communications in the very low power regime, the proposed research will gain knowledge in multiple layers in the communication protocol stack. In the physical layer, novel modulation and demodulation techniques will be discovered, which will use the locations and phases of the peaks generated by the ZC sequence to modulate data. In the MAC layer, a new random access method will be designed, which meets the requirements of low power communications.  Network-wide optimization algorithms will also be proposed, which will allocate the network resources, such as frequency channels, considering different levels of interference by ZC sequences with different roots. In addition, ZCNET will be implemented and many real-world problems will be solved for its further translation to practice.
